ANTIQUE
GERMAN DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUNS
This is a 16-gage, with 30-inch barrels, and 3-inch receiver
area that houses the transitional mechanisms. This is a most
unusual shotgun. It has been referred to as a transitional
from the black powder era to the cartridge. Personally, I’ve
never seen anything quite like it and many gun collectors I
have shown it to, have not seen anything like it either. It
has elaborate engraving in the metal. It has a checkered stock
in the grip area. It has a cheek rest with beautiful walnut
wood. The buttstock has a tag indicating German registration.
The current tag reads Waffensammlung/der Stadt Suhl/Nr.269.
There appears to have been a different registration tag before
that was a little larger where this smaller one is now. On one
side of the lock plate area is marked ULBRICH which is the
maker, and on the other lock it is marked IN DRESDEN. On the
rib between the barrels it is marked C ULBRICH IN DRESDEN in
gold leaf. One lock has an engraving of a bird, and the other
has an engraving of two deer. Both engravings are part of an
elaborate design. On the metal part behind the barrels, is
engraved a hunter holding a gun with a duck on the water below
this. There is a shield with a crown over an S with a goldleaf
design above and below it. There is scrollwork on the
triggerguard area and that shows dogs capturing a fox. The
lever under the wood is the cocking mechanism. I am not
entirely sure how it is reloaded. I took the shotgun to
Ruidoso to show it to a collector of antique German-made
firearms, but he was in Germany at the time of the show. It is
a very attractive and unusual item
